stuff I like

Being that I have a slow day job (don't worry, my boss knows that I know this), I have to spend a lot of my free time thinking of things to do. Or rather, I have to spend my free time passing that free time until 4pm comes ("have to" might be a bit of a stretch...but if I didn't I'd likely end up slumped over in my desk chair, drooling).

One of the websites I always forget to check but thoroughly enjoy is Where else can you read witty (often hilarious) and inspiring commentaries on the Biblical way to wear makeup and the importance of marrying up your friends? Exactly. Nowhere else. Thank you, John Acuff.

Have you heard of "Stuff White People Like" by Christian Lander. His was the first of "stuff (insert people group) like" The book is SO funny!

You know, I like Jon Acuff's stuff, but sometimes I feel that by pointing out some of the things he does it can have a detrimental effect on people. He encourages sarcasm, which I love dearly, but which at it's heart always contains at least a speck of truth.

And lets face it, sarcasm can be a passive aggressive way to get away with saying something mean. Not always, but it CAN be. And it can always be interpreted that way, even if it wasn't intended.

His posts sometimes seem more like poking fun at the things we do, even the actions that are done in good faith and line up biblically. I can give you examples, but that's too much work for a blog comment. I'm all for having a sense of humour and acknowledging our idiosyncrasies as a culture, but how far is too far?

I mean, he does get serious a lot and put forth some really important reminders about living our faith. I have a lot of respect for him as a writer and thinker. But sometimes his 'Stuff Christians Like' posts just make me uncomfortable.

What if someone reads his post about different ways people hold up their hands and feels ashamed because they've now been judged and labeled when they were worshiping God?? What then? Is this beneficial to the body of believers? Is getting a chuckle worth it??

I dunno. I get a kick out of a bunch of his stuff (because, um, HILARIOUS). But again, it just sometimes... squicks me. You know?

I will get off my soap box now. End rant.

ah, Elise, loved this comment! Truth be told, I've only stopped by the website like, 5 times. Each time I've happened to find stuff that's funny - although I'm sure if I went by on a more regular basis, I would find stuff I opposed to (and you made such good points, I really think I would).

Never apologize for being on a soapbox. I have a whole section of this blog devoted to my own.
